Tiger Conch - Strombus sp.

Product Description:

The Tiger Conch (Strombus sp.) is a striking marine snail species prized for its distinctive shell patterning and beneficial role in the aquarium. With its vibrant tiger-like stripes and unique feeding habits, this conch species adds both visual appeal and practical benefits to your marine setup. Known for its proficiency in sand sifting and detritus consumption, the Tiger Conch helps maintain substrate health while contributing to nutrient control and algae prevention.

Key Features:

1. Striking Shell Patterning: The Tiger Conch boasts a beautiful shell adorned with bold stripes reminiscent of a tiger's markings. Its eye-catching appearance adds a touch of elegance and natural beauty to the aquarium, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.

2. Sand Sifting Abilities: As proficient sand sifters, Tiger Conchs play a crucial role in substrate maintenance by constantly sifting through the sand bed in search of detritus, uneaten food, and organic matter. This natural behavior helps prevent the accumulation of debris, promoting a cleaner and healthier substrate environment.

3. Algae Control: In addition to detritus consumption, Tiger Conchs also graze on microalgae and diatoms present on rock surfaces and substrate, contributing to algae control and preventing unsightly algae outbreaks.

Care Instructions:

  • Tank Size: Provide a spacious aquarium with a sandy substrate to accommodate the Tiger Conch's sand sifting behavior. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for adequate space and substrate coverage.

  • Substrate: Use fine sand or aragonite substrate to mimic the Tiger Conch's natural habitat and facilitate effective sand sifting. Avoid coarse substrates that may cause injury to the delicate foot of the conch.

  • Feeding: Tiger Conchs are primarily detritivores and algae grazers, deriving nutrition from consuming detritus, microalgae, and diatoms. They do not require supplemental feeding but will benefit from the presence of natural food sources in the aquarium.

  • Tank Mates: Tiger Conchs are peaceful and compatible with a wide range of marine fish and invertebrates. However, avoid housing them with aggressive species that may prey on or harass them.

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C), pH between 8.1-8.4, and salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity.

  • Acclimation: When introducing Tiger Conchs to the aquarium, acclimate them slowly to prevent stress and ensure a smooth transition.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate, suitable for beginner and experienced marine aquarists.

Maximum Size: Tiger Conchs typically reach sizes of up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in shell length.
