Orchid Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani)
The Orchid Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani) is a stunning marine fish known for its vibrant purple coloration and feisty personality. This species is popular in reef aquariums due to its striking appearance, small size, and ability to thrive in captive environments.
Description:
• Common Name: Orchid Dottyback
• Scientific Name: Pseudochromis fridmani
• Family: Pseudochromidae
• Size: Up to 3 inches (7.5 cm)
• Color: Vivid purple body with a distinctive black line running from the snout through the eye, making it one of the most visually appealing saltwater fish.
Native Region:
Orchid Dottybacks are native to the Red Sea, where they inhabit coral reefs and rocky crevices, often found in caves or hiding among coral branches.
Aquarium Setup:
• Tank Size: Minimum of 20 gallons (75 liters)
• Water Parameters:
• Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C)
• pH: 8.1-8.4
• Salinity: 1.020-1.025 specific gravity
• Substrate: Fine sand or crushed coral with plenty of live rock formations to create hiding places and territories.
• Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on a varied diet including brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. They may also feed on small invertebrates in the tank.
Care Level:
• Difficulty: Easy to moderate
• Temperament: Semi-aggressive, particularly toward other small, similarly shaped fish. They are territorial but can coexist with a variety of tank mates if provided ample hiding spots.
• Lifespan: 5-7 years in captivity
Territorial Behavior:
Orchid Dottybacks can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks or when housed with other dottybacks or similar species. They do well in larger tanks with plenty of live rock to establish their territory. When kept with peaceful tank mates, they typically display calm behavior.
Additional Tips:
• Tank Mates: Compatible with other peaceful fish like gobies, clownfish, and blennies. Avoid housing them with other dottybacks or similarly aggressive species unless the tank is large enough to accommodate multiple territories.
• Behavior: Though small in size, Orchid Dottybacks are bold and curious. They spend much of their time exploring caves, crevices, and hiding places within the rockwork. Despite their occasional territorial behavior, they are a great choice for reef tanks due to their minimal impact on corals and other invertebrates.
• Water Quality: Stable and pristine water conditions are essential. Regular water changes and efficient filtration help maintain the health and vibrant color of this species.
