Ropefish / Reedfish - Erpetoichthys calabaricus

Product Description:

The Ropefish (Erpetoichthys calabaricus), also known as the Reedfish, is a fascinating and ancient fish species that brings a touch of the prehistoric to your freshwater aquarium. With its elongated, snake-like body and unique appearance, the Ropefish is sure to be a conversation starter and a captivating addition to any tank.

Key Features:

1. Unique Appearance: The Ropefish is easily recognizable by its long, slender body, which can reach lengths of up to 15-24 inches (38-61 cm). Its olive-green coloration and serpentine movement give it a distinctive, almost mythical presence in the aquarium.

2. Nocturnal Behavior: Ropefish are primarily nocturnal, becoming more active at night. They have poor eyesight and rely on their sense of smell and lateral line system to navigate and find food.

3. Hardy and Adaptable: Known for their hardiness, Ropefish can adapt to a range of water conditions, making them suitable for both novice and experienced aquarists.

Care Instructions:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended due to their potential size and active swimming behavior. A larger tank is preferable for adult specimens.

  • Aquarium Setup: Provide a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots using caves, driftwood, and dense vegetation. Ensure a secure lid, as Ropefish are known to escape through small openings. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal.

  • Feeding: Ropefish are carnivorous and prefer a diet of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. They can also be trained to accept high-quality sinking pellets and meaty foods.

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C), pH between 6.0-7.5, and hardness between 5-20 dGH. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep the environment clean.

  • Tank Mates: Suitable tank mates include other large, peaceful fish that share similar water conditions. Avoid keeping with small fish that can be easily mistaken for food or aggressive species that may harm the Ropefish.

Difficulty: Moderate, requires specific care and a secure tank setup to prevent escape.

Maximum Size: The Ropefish can grow up to 15-24 inches (38-61 cm) in length.
