Zebra/Striped Blenny (Meiacanthus grammistes)

The Zebra Blenny (Meiacanthus grammistes), also known as the Striped Blenny or Striped Fangblenny, is a stunning saltwater fish with striking black and white horizontal stripes. This hardy species is a popular choice among marine aquarists for its vivid appearance and peaceful nature.

Description:

Common Name: Zebra Blenny, Striped Blenny, Striped Fangblenny

Scientific Name: Meiacanthus grammistes

Family: Blenniidae

Size: Up to 5 inches (12 cm)

Color: The Zebra Blenny is known for its bold black stripes running horizontally along its body, contrasted against a pale yellow or white background. This striped pattern gives the fish a distinct zebra-like appearance.

Native Region:

The Zebra Blenny is found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around coral reefs and lagoons. They prefer shallow waters with plenty of hiding spots and crevices among the rocks and corals.

Aquarium Setup:

Tank Size: Minimum of 30 gallons (115 liters)

Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C)

Salinity: 1.020-1.025 specific gravity

Substrate: Fine sand or crushed coral, with plenty of live rock to provide hiding spots and territories.

Diet: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet of high-quality marine pellets, flakes, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and chopped seafood. They will also graze on algae and other small organisms in the tank.

Care Level:

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with other blennies or similarly shaped fish. Best kept in a peaceful community tank with other non-aggressive marine species.

Lifespan: 2-4 years

Venomous: The Zebra Blenny has venomous fangs used for defense, not for aggression. This makes them less prone to being bullied by larger fish.

Additional Tips:

Tank Mates: Suitable tank mates include other peaceful marine species such as gobies, clownfish, and small wrasses. Avoid larger or aggressive species that may intimidate or harass the blenny.

Behavior: Zebra Blennies are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their tank. They may dart into crevices or caves when startled, but they are generally bold and will swim out in the open once comfortable.

Water Quality: Maintain high water quality with regular water changes and effective filtration. As with most marine species, stable water parameters are crucial for the health of the Zebra Blenny.
