Crystal Red Shrimp are highly sought-after freshwater invertebrates, beloved for their stunning red and white coloration and fascinating, active behavior. These shrimp are popular among aquarists who appreciate unique and visually striking tank inhabitants.

Description:

Common Name: Crystal Red Shrimp (CRS)

Scientific Name: Caridina cantonensis

Family: Atyidae

Size: Up to 1-1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm)

Coloration: Vibrant red and bright white bands; graded based on the intensity and pattern of their color

Native Region:

Originally derived from wild Caridina species in Asia, Crystal Red Shrimp have been selectively bred in captivity to enhance their distinct color patterns and appearance.

Aquarium Setup:

Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons; larger tanks are preferable for more stable water parameters

Substrate: Shrimp-specific or soft substrates are ideal; dark substrates highlight their striking colors

Plants and Decor: Aquatic mosses, driftwood, and live plants provide shelter, biofilm growth, and foraging areas

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 68-75°F (20-24°C)

pH: 6.0-6.8 (slightly acidic)

Hardness: Soft water (1-5 dGH)

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): 100-200 ppm

Care Level:

Difficulty: Moderate to advanced; sensitive to water quality and parameters

Diet: Omnivorous; feed on biofilm, high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and specialized foods for Caridina shrimp

Behavior: Peaceful and active; best kept in a dedicated shrimp tank or with non-aggressive nano fish

Additional Tips:

Tank Mates: Ideal with other small, peaceful species or kept in a species-only tank to prevent stress and predation.

Breeding: Breeds readily when water conditions are stable. Females carry eggs for 3-4 weeks before releasing fully formed shrimplets.

Maintenance: Regular, small water changes are essential. Sudden shifts in parameters can stress or harm shrimp.
