Yellow Goldenback Shrimp (Neocaridina sp.)

The Yellow Goldenback Shrimp is a visually striking freshwater shrimp known for its vibrant yellow coloration and unique golden back pattern. This shrimp is a popular choice among aquarists for its bright, eye-catching appearance and relatively easy care requirements.

Description:

Common Name: Yellow Goldenback Shrimp

Scientific Name: Neocaridina sp.

Family: Atyidae

Size: Up to 1.5 inches (4 cm)

Color: Bright yellow body with a distinctive golden stripe running along the back. The coloration can range from pale yellow to deep gold, creating a vivid and attractive display in any aquarium.

Native Region:

The Yellow Goldenback Shrimp is a variant of the Neocaridina genus, which is originally native to freshwater rivers and streams in Taiwan and other parts of Southeast Asia. This species has been selectively bred in captivity for its striking color and pattern.

Aquarium Setup:

Tank Size: Minimum of 10 gallons (38 liters)

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 65-75°F (18-24°C)

pH: 6.5-8.0

Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (4-12 dGH)

Substrate: Soft sand or fine gravel; a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and surfaces for grazing

Diet: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet of high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables such as spinach and zucchini. They will also graze on biofilm and algae in the tank.

Care Level:

Difficulty: Easy

Temperament: Peaceful and social; best kept in groups to exhibit natural behaviors and reduce stress. They are generally hardy and adapt well to a range of tank conditions.

Lifespan: 1-2 years

Breeding: Breeding is straightforward in captivity. They are live-bearers and will produce small, fully-formed shrimp that are capable of surviving in the main tank. Provide plenty of hiding spots for baby shrimp to avoid predation by adult shrimp or other tank inhabitants.

Additional Tips:

Tank Mates: Suitable for community tanks with other peaceful species, including small fish and invertebrates. Avoid larger or aggressive fish that may prey on the shrimp.

Behavior: Yellow Goldenback Shrimp are active and engage in natural scavenging and grazing behaviors. They are most active during the day and can be observed exploring the tank and foraging for food.

Water Quality: Maintain good water quality with regular water changes and effective filtration. These shrimp are sensitive to poor water conditions, which can lead to molting issues and health problems.
