Otocinclus Catfish, most often simply referred to as Otos, are one of the best fish an aquarist can buy in the fight against algae. Unlike the ubiquitous pleco, they stay small, allowing them to be kept in a wider range of aquariums without overcrowding. Their coloration is mostly shades of tans, browns, and blacks, with brown at the top, a horizontal black bar running across the body, and a cream colored underside.
Care
Otos are a small and peaceful species that grow to about 1.5" long. They are a social species, and prefer to be kept in groups of 5 or more. Despite their small size, they are voracious algae eaters, especially in a team, and will tirelessly work to keep every nook and cranny of your tank spotless. They make an excellent addition to planted tanks, and will help clear the leaves of algae without damaging the plant itself.
Diet
Otos will get the majority of their food from naturally occurring algae in the aquarium, but should be provided with supplemental algae wafers if the algae supply runs too low.
